Step aboard the USS Bowfin (SS-287) with us as we take you on an unforgettable tour through one of the most legendary submarines of World War II, right in the heart of Pearl Harbor, Oahu, Hawaii.
🚢 From bow to stern, we walk you through the tight quarters, hidden corners, and ingenious design that made this Gato-class submarine a silent but deadly force in the Pacific theater. The USS Bowfin, nicknamed “The Pearl Harbor Avenger,” was launched exactly one year after the attack on Pearl Harbor and went on to complete nine successful war patrols, sinking 44 enemy vessels. That’s a huge number for a single submarine during the war!
🧭 What You’ll See in This Video:
A full walkthrough of the interior—from torpedo room to engine room
Sailors' bunks stacked over torpedoes (yes, really!)
A metal lathe tucked near the engine room (submarine repairs on the go!)
The galley (kitchen) where meals were made just feet from machinery
The crew’s tiny quarters—every inch of space had a purpose
Photos of real crew members like “Ski,” whose 30th birthday was celebrated aboard in 1945
Fascinating design features like tight hatches, periscopes, sonar stations, and gauges
Every section of the Bowfin is a living memory of ingenuity, resilience, and the human cost of war.
💡 Fascinating USS Bowfin Facts:
Commissioned in 1942, the USS Bowfin served in the Pacific and helped cut off vital Japanese supply lines.
The sub is 311 feet long and carried 24 torpedoes, with torpedo rooms at both the front (bow) and back (stern)—which shocked us!
Submariners had to sleep on top of and beside these massive weapons due to space constraints.
She was decommissioned in 1947 and now rests as a museum ship at Pearl Harbor since 1981.
🎥 BONUS FOOTAGE: The Kaiten Torpedo 🚨
At the end of our video, don’t miss rare up-close footage of a Type 4 Kaiten—Japan’s manned suicide torpedo, displayed at the museum. These terrifying weapons were piloted by Japanese naval personnel in a desperate attempt to change the tide of war.
The Kaiten Type 4 could reach speeds up to 40 knots and carried 3,000 pounds of explosives.
These weapons were highly secret during the war and were seen as an honor-bound mission by their pilots.
Most Kaitens never reached their targets, but their existence is a sobering reminder of how far nations will go in times of war.
🎟️ Museum Info:
Entry: $25 per person
20% military discount
Our Take: We believe veterans should be granted free entry in honor of their service. What better way to connect with history than to allow those who’ve served to walk these decks without a price tag?
