This is the story of Korean airlines flight 631. Before we get started, you probably know that this video is about korean airlines so youre probably atleast a bit interested in korean airlines. So ive gotta ask, am i the only one that likes their new livery? Everywhere ive looked online its just been people displeased with it. Is it really that bad? I mean i think it looks great. But yeah let me know what you think in the comments below and lets get to the video. On the 23rd october 2022 an airbus a330 with 176 people on board was making the flight from seoul to mactan cebu international airport . The flight looking like a normal flight the plane took off it cruised all the way up to the cruising altitude and then it was time to take the plane down to the runway. Landing at macatan is nothing to write home about but today would be a bit harder than usual because the airport was covered in a layer of rain and clouds which meant that it was IMC or instrument meteorological conditions all the way down. The captain was the one flying and the first officer looked at the instruments to make sure that things were all okay. As the plane got near the airport plans changed a bit, the runway in use was changed from runway 04 to runway 22 as the winds shifed around and it made more sense to land on 22. But the pilots would need more than a runway change to make this work as on their first approach the they lost visual on the runway and had to go around. As rain blanketed the airplane the two pratt and whitney 4168s roared to life pushing the A330 back into the skies of mactan , but thats okay attempt number two could be set up remotely quickly and they'd be on the ground in no time. They lined up with runway 22 and they took the plane down. In the cockpit as they searched for the runway the automated call outs counted down their altitude from the ground. As the robotic voice ghit 40 the first officer called go around. Teh airplane exclaimed sink rate as the ground swelled up towards them. The captain immediately hit max power and the jet started to go around. But then the sound of the main landing gears slamming into the ground. But the jet started to climb away, but they soon realized that they didnt get by unscathed. Their ecam displays began lighting up. They were unlucky enough to hit the lip of the runway, that is the runway is raised a bit from the surrounding grass and the main landing gear made contact right there. Think of it as driving your truck over a singular one foot high step at about a 180 miles an hour. This had wrecked the gear assembly. In the cockpit the pilots were being notified that the LGCIU 1 and 2 had failed. By the way the LGCIU stands for landing gear control interface unit. The captain was understandably concerned about the brakes, the first officer let him know that they had 1000 psi of pressure in the brake lines. He decided to get on the horn with operations and caught them up to speed on what was wrong with the plane, they had the LGCIU faults, a normal brake fault an anti skid fault and a reverser fault. This landing would be hard. You could get the plane on the runway but with the braks and the reversers out of the fight stopping this plane on seouls now slippery wet runway would require a miracle. But they decided to go for it anyway. They needed to get this plane on the ground and lined up for another shot. But as they came down, they extended the gear, as they watched the indicators the right hand indicator was red meaning that the right hand gear wasnt locked, they needed time to figure out what their wounded plane was capable of and what it wasnt. They canceled the landing clearance and held over the waypoint ALMAR. They worked the problem, but they had no way of knowing if the gravity extension had worked and the right main gear was indeed locked or if this was a false indication stemming from the damage sustained by the gear. He knew that he had no option but to land he made the radio call that no pilot ever wants to make ““Tower, Korean Air Six Three One, Mayday (3x), landing gear unsafe, we are going to make an emergency landing approach, please prepare”. In the cockpit they shut down the bravo hydraulic pump as they reservoir was starting to run low. So just to recap this plane would be landing with severely compromised brakes if any, reversers were disabled, anti skid was off. The pilots made plans on what to do if the landing didnt go according to plan.
