How to set up a hugelkultur bed! 🌱

1) Start with some big logs 🪵 these logs will take a few years to break down, all the while slowly feeding your soil.

2) Add some fresh manure or compost 💩The microbes will colonise the wood starting the process of mineralising and decaying!

3) Add a layer of browns 🗞 I’d prefer to use something that is going to allow air flow such as straw, mulch, coconut coir. But if you don’t have any of these paper and cardboard will do the trick

4) Keep piling up the layers of browns and greens 🥪 This sandwich technique creates an explosion of microbial population!

5) Add at least 20cm/8in of vegetable growing soil 🥦 it’s best not to grow root crops (carrots, potatoes and beets) for the first season and stick with plants that have a more shallow root system such as lettuce or bokchoy. If you add 30cm/11in of soil you can grow medium root size crops (tomatoes, broccoli, corn)

Over time this garden bed will slowly regenerate- that means it will get healthier and more fertile 🪱
