Stephen Hooser is a professor of veterinary toxicology in the Department of Comparative Pathobiology in the College of Veterinary Medicine, and a veterinary toxicologist at the Animal Disease Diagnostic Laboratory at Purdue University. In this video, he explains that poinsettias, holly and mistletoe are not dangerous for pets but that lilies are toxic to cats. While poinsettias and other popular holiday plants can cause irritation if enough is eaten, these are not considered deadly. The plant that poses the biggest threat for pets are certain kinds of lilies. Tiger lilies, Asiatic lilies and Easter lilies should be kept away from cats. If a cat eats a petal, drinks the water they are growing in or are exposed to the pollen, they could suffer deadly kidney damage. If a pet has eaten a plant, Hooser recommends calling a veterinarian or an animal poison control center. If people suspect their cat has been exposed to lilies, they should be taken to a veterinarian as soon as possible.
