This was my honest experience attending the 50th Anniversary of the Rainbow Family Gathering.

The Rainbow Family Gathering is an unsanctioned event that happens every summer, where thousands of hippies flock to a secret location somewhere on national forest land to build a village from nothing.

You could call the Rainbow Family a commune, but it’s not a typical commune where a group of people lives together full-time. It’s like a temporary commune where the village gets built and torn down in the span of a few months, culminating in a festival-like event during the week of July 4th.

The location is always different, but many members of the Rainbow Family return year after year, especially this year. Because what began 50 years ago in 1972, is still happening to this day, and a handful of the original Rainbow Family are still alive and were celebrating 50 years.

When I was researching The Rainbow Family Gathering, some people said this event was the epitome of a hippie utopia, while others were a lot more critical.

So what’s the truth about the Rainbow Family Gathering? I needed to find out for myself. So I decided to attend the 50th Anniversary of Rainbow Family Gathering to experience this historic event and hopefully get some answers.
