The Padma Multipurpose Bridge commonly known as the Padma Bridge, is a two-level road-rail bridge across the Padma River, the main distributary of the Ganges in Bangladesh. It connects Louhajang Upazila of Munshiganj and Zazira Upazila of Shariatpur and a small part of Shibchar Upazila of Madaripur, linking the less developed southwest of the country to the northern and eastern regions. The bridge was inaugurated at morning on 25 June 2022 with white pigeon by the Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
The bridge is considered to be the most challenging construction project in the history of Bangladesh, the steel truss bridge carries a four-lane highway on the upper level and a single track railway on the lower level. The bridge consists of 41 sections, each 150.12 m (492.5 ft) long and 22 metres (72 ft) wide, with a total length of 6.15 km (3.82 mi). It is the longest bridge in Bangladesh, the longest bridge over the river Ganges by both span and total length, and features the highest pile depth of any bridge in the world at 120 m (390 ft). It is the deepest bridge in the world, with piles installed as deep as 127 metres. The construction of the bridge was considered to be especially challenging due to width and depth of the Padma River.
পদ্মা সেতু বা পদ্মা বহুমুখী সেতু হচ্ছে বাংলাদেশের পদ্মা নদীর উপর নির্মিত একটি বহুমুখী সড়ক ও রেল সেতু। এর মাধ্যমে মুন্সীগঞ্জের লৌহজংয়ের সাথে শরীয়তপুর ও মাদারীপুর জেলা যুক্ত হয়েছে। সেতুটি ২০২২ সালের ২৫ জুন উদ্বোধন করা হয়। এই দিন বাংলাদেশের প্রধানমন্ত্রী শেখ হাসিনা নিজে মাওয়া প্রান্ত দিয়ে টোল প্রদান করে প্রথমবারের মতো আনুষ্ঠানিকভাবে পদ্মা সেতুতে আরোহণ করেন এবং এর মাধ্যমে সেতুটি উন্মুক্ত করা হয়।
পদ্মা সেতুর নির্মাণ কাজ বাংলাদেশের ইতিহাসে সবচেয়ে চ্যালেঞ্জিং নির্মাণ প্রকল্প হিসেবে বিবেচিত। দুই স্তর বিশিষ্ট ইস্পাত ও কংক্রিট নির্মিত ট্রাসের এই সেতুর উপরের স্তরে চার লেনের সড়ক পথ এবং নিচের স্তরে একটি একক রেলপথ রয়েছে। পদ্মা-ব্রহ্মপুত্র-মেঘনা নদীর অববাহিকায় তৈরি সেতুটি ৪১টি স্প্যান নিয়ে গঠিত, প্রতিটি স্প্যান লম্বায় ১৫০.১২ মিটার (৪৯২.৫ ফুট) এবং চওড়ায় ২২.৫ মিটার (৭৪ ফুট)। সেতুটির মোট দৈর্ঘ্য ৬.১৫ কিমি (৩.৮২ মাইল)। এটি বাংলাদেশের দীর্ঘতম সেতু, স্প্যান সংখ্যা ও মোট দৈর্ঘ্য উভয়ের দিক থেকে গঙ্গা নদীর উপর নির্মিত দীর্ঘতম সেতু এবং ১২৮ মিটার (৪২০ ফুট) গভীরতাযুক্ত বিশ্বের গভীরতম পাইলের সেতু।
সেতুটি চালু হওয়ার পর বাংলাদেশের জিডিপি ১.২ শতাংশ বৃদ্ধি পাবে বলে আশা করা হচ্ছে।
