When it comes to drag racing, the front suspension plays a pivotal role in your car's performance - perhaps even more so than the rear suspension. Its primary function? Transferring weight to the rear suspension, enabling the car to launch forward effectively.

We've seen various front suspension setups over the years, from the iconic gassers of the '60s to modern long-travel suspension cars like Beater Bomb. Despite their differences, these designs share a common goal: optimizing weight transfer from the front to the rear of the car.
For the average sportsman bracket racer, focusing on the front suspension can yield significant gains in consistency and performance. Plus, it might just help you achieve those childhood dreams of popping wheelies!
Two key aspects define front suspension performance: travel and freedom. Travel refers to the amount of vertical movement the suspension allows, often limited by factory components. Freedom, on the other hand, describes how smoothly the suspension articulates through its range of motion.
Increasing suspension travel can be challenging with factory-style setups, but small modifications like removing bump stops or using ball joint spacers can help. However, enhancing suspension freedom often yields more noticeable improvements.
Upgrading to performance-oriented bushings, like Global West's Del-a-Lum bushings, can dramatically improve articulation. These bushings allow the suspension to move freely around its pivot points, enhancing overall performance without sacrificing ride quality.
Spring selection is another crucial factor in weight transfer. Lighter springs generally allow for more stored energy and effective weight transfer. However, choosing the right spring depends on factors like front-end weight and desired ride height.
Lastly, shock absorbers play a vital role in controlling weight transfer. Double-adjustable shocks offer the most tuning flexibility, allowing you to fine-tune both extension and compression rates. This adjustability helps optimize weight transfer and maintain rear tire traction throughout your run.
By focusing on these aspects of front suspension tuning, you can significantly improve your drag car's consistency and performance. Whether you're aiming for picture-perfect wheelies or lightning-fast ETs, a well-tuned front suspension is key to realizing your drag racing dreams.
