Patients who have very slow heart rhythm abnormalities may need a pacemaker. Many patients with abnormally slow heart rhythms will have dizziness or low energy. Implantable pacemakers almost entirely resolve these symptoms for most patients. After patients receive pacemakers or implantable defibrillators, ultimately they'll have no activity restrictions and can do most of the things that they want to do in their life. In the short term, after these devices are implanted, we do restrict arm movement for about two weeks, and we do advise people to avoid excessive exertion for about six weeks. After patients receive pacemakers and defibrillators, most of their follow-up can actually be done from home. Modern devices actually have remote monitoring capabilities, and most of our patients only present specifically for the device care in person, once a year. Patients receiving pacemakers have improved energy. Patients who have ablation procedures are not having palpitations and dizziness. And one of the wonderful things about being involved in this field is being able to not only extend people's lives, but provide them with better quality of life.
