One hospital, 19 days, life-changing care

Roy McMillan is a fighter with a family that didn’t give up on him. After being found unresponsive at home and rushed to the hospital, the 67-year-old retired U.S. Air Force veteran and great grandfather was critically ill; he didn’t have enough oxygen in his blood. Roy went into cardiac arrest at the hospital, and his heart stopped. “I tell people it’s the night he died,” said Roy’s wife, Melvin McMillan. But Roy was resuscitated, connected to a ventilator and for the next 140 days, battled life-threatening complications including pneumonia and influenza as he moved among different facilities.
