Poros
Poros is an island in the Saronic Gulf. Its ancient name was Kalavria. It has 3,993 inhabitants according to the 2011 census that constitute the municipality of the same name. It is located a short distance from the coast of Peloponnese and opposite the village of Galatas in Troizinia. It is known, among other things, for the great lemon grove located on the coast above, while it is popular as a place for small escapes from Athens.
In fact, it is two islands, Sphaeria and Kalavria, which are separated by a very small sea channel.
Kalavria is sedimentary and dominated by limestone and shale rocks. Sphaeria is of volcanic origin and emerged from an eruption of the Methana volcano, and the city of Poros is built right on top of a small domed crater.
The historical clock, donated by the merchant and MP Ioannis Papadopoulos, high on the hill of Sfeiria, in the center of Poros, is a trademark of the island. In the southeastern part of Kalavria, there is the historical Monastery of Kalavria, or Zoodochos Pigi Poros Monastery, built in 1713.
The most important attractions of the island are:
• The entire town of Poros, which is built amphitheatrically on the slopes of a hill and has been designated a traditional settlement since 1993. 69 of its neoclassical buildings have been declared listed buildings (see Traditional Settlements of Greece).
The archaeological museum, in Koryzi square, which hosts finds from the temple of Poseidon, ancient Troizena and other nearby archaeological sites.
In the northern part of the island are the ruins of the temple of Poseidon, which was the center of Amphictyonia of Kalauria. The exact date of its construction is not known, although researchers estimate that it was built around 520 BC. The dimensions of the temple, which has a Doric style, are 27.4 x 14.4 m. It is supported by 6 columns across and 12 columns across length.
Αnother attraction you can visit is the dana lighthouse.
The "Dana" Lighthouse, which dominates the entrance of the Poros Bay, was built in 1870 by the French Company of Ottoman Lighthouses. It is one of the most beautiful stone-built square lighthouses in Greece and is one of the newest monuments of the maritime history of the place. The height of its tower is 9 meters and its focal height is 32 meters.
It is less than 6 kilometers from the town of Poros. The path from the asphalt road to the lighthouse is paved and the journey takes no more than fifteen minutes. From there the visitor can admire the beautiful view of the Saronic Sea and the Methana peninsula.
