India’s proposed CAFE-III fuel efficiency norms for FY28–FY32 have triggered a major debate within the automobile industry. Automakers are divided over whether small and lightweight petrol cars below 909 kg should be given special exemptions under the new rules.
Kia Motors has now entered the debate, writing to the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) and opposing the proposal for a new sub-category for small petrol cars. Kia argues that such exemptions could dilute the core objective of CAFE norms, which aim to improve fuel efficiency and reduce carbon emissions across the sector.
