This is an ex - Royal Navy fire pump which has been restored to running condition. Specified output is 60hp or 400GPM pumping capacity. Fuel consumption is up to 850ml per minute!
The seized hand crank starter mechanism was removed, and replaced with a DC electric motor and reduction gearbox. The starter spools the engine until reaches around 20,000 RPM.
The starter also drives a magneto and an air vane pump. The magneto provides a 90V AC supply to a high energy igniter driver box. The vane pump temporarily supplies compressed air to the fuel atomizing nozzle until the engine bleed air builds to a sufficient pressure.
The pump outlets and some of the original framework has been removed to reduce bulk. Also, the oil-water heat exchanger has been replaced with an oil-air radiator to allow the engine to run without a cooling water supply.
These units were designed to be self-contained emergency pumps. They could be used if a ship's main firefighting systems were out of action.
