Video onboard Setra S407-CC #5602 operating on the NJ Transit contracted 107 Super Express (107SX) emergency route between Port Authority Bus Terminal in New York City and South Orange NJT Rail Station. This bus route made no stops between NYC and South Orange rail station, via the New Jersey Turnpike (I-95), Essex Freeway (I-280) until exit 10 and various local streets in the Oranges.
Service on this route operated as a result of the 2025 NJT rail strike. Railroad employees walked off the job at 12:01 AM on May 16th due to disagreement in contract negotiations between the BLET union and NJ Transit management. This lead to a suspension of all commuter rail lines within the state of New Jersey as well as Metro-North's Port Jervis and Pascack Valley Line service.
Anticipating massive congestion due to the lack of train service, NJ Transit prepared a network of bus routes operating to PATH rail stations, and boosted service on some of the NYC routes with special express variants from several train stations. PATH was still running since it is not an NJ Transit service. Limited service along the Northeast Corridor line existed via Amtrak. All extra service, even the temporary expresses/super-expresses on the NYC routes were not operated by NJ Transit. It was instead contracted out to various private operators. Service on the 107SX was operated by United Bus Corporation of New York, headquartered in Newark. Many other operators also provided extra service, including Peter Pan and Academy Bus.
Out of all the express variants, the 107SX was the only route which operated from both terminals of the main route and the only one to cover the full route (albeit with a different route pattern). All other bus routes were effectively some short-turn route which operated point-to-point service with no stops. Service on this route only operated for one day as the strike culminated within a few days from its start. The strike ended on Sunday May 18th, however inspections of rail equipment required service to remain suspended on Monday, May 19th. The 107SX service was discontinued at the end of PM rush hour service, with rail service on the Morris & Essex Line resuming the following day.
