Good afternoon friends old and new. Once again I come to the public for help. Taxes have come up again for my historic property here on 502 N Ann street in Brackettville TX, some small few already know this property once belonged to my parents Bud Breen, noted Western artist..painter. Nakai Breen, documented Native American Indian (Cherokee) medicine woman and Indian advocate.
During the mid 1990's this propertybuilding was the local "Cowboys & Indian" museum which housed many Native American and American Cowboy artifacts, memorabilia and art, as well as the documentation of my mothers work in helping a tribe of Kickapoo Indians from Eagle Pass Texas become a recognized tribe and securing land for them to live as opposed to living under the city overpass in cardboard homes as they once did. When the museum was functioning and recognized, it was a non-profit tax free establishment. Unfortunately after my Father Bud Breen passed away in Sept. 2005 and during my Mothers final years due to declining health before passing away in Sept. 2013 the museum became defunct and tax exemption expired which took place in 2011.
Fast forward..property was then willed to me upon my last parents passing and I was left with a severe outstanding bill for back taxes due to the tax exemption expiring when it did, unbeknown to my previous knowledge.
I have come to the public’s help previously on this matter and was able to pay down $1,727 which temporarily retained my ownership of said property but that only severed the auction still leaving me with a large sum still owed now from 2013 present. I have tried on my own to pay off what i could but it was like tossing 20's and 50's into the Grand Canyon. As a artist and crafts man there is only so much I can make to survive and pay off such and outstanding bill. With your help I hope to pay down $1,904.49 by MAY 1st which will end the public auction of this historic property. Afterwards I would like to raise the other half to take care of the long overdue taxes to help me catch up and allow me to pay normal yearly taxes when due. Now that you know about my goal let me share a little about my hopes and dream for this historic building. This beautiful antique building is one of the few still functional "old" houses here in Brackettville. this building was built in the mid 1800's and from what I researched is called a "pattern home", which many similar houses are sprinkled throughout Texas. As with Any building this old it does need some repairs here and there which i hope to remedy as soon as possible. After working on the building and bringing everything up to code I want to re-open it as a fully functioning museum again.
Right now I have one room solely dedicated to my parents where it houses a remaing collection of Native American Indian artifacts and items that belonged to my Mother Nakai Breen and some few salvaged pieces of artwork from my Father Bud Breen, along with some few artifacts from his cowboy ranching days and when he took part during the glory days of Brackettville's Alamo Village....the original John Wayne "ALAMO" movie set. Yes my Father was one of the extras on set and had small appearances in other films that were shot on this set many years ago. This is one of the rooms I plan on having available to the public.
The rest of the museums rooms I want to have on permanent display my jaw dropping Raggedy Ann & Andy collection which consist of 3-5thousand pieces. I want to create a TEXAS sized Raggedy Ann & Andy museum that will be a first to this area of Texas.
My love and fascination with all things Raggedy began when i was a infant, Mother was a avid shopper at yard sales and flea markets so throughout my youth every second hand Raggedy Ann & Andy we found I collected. I have long since locally been known for my extensive collection of anything Raggedy Ann & Andy from Dolls to books to linens to toys to clothing and everything and everything that was commercially manufactured or handmade over their 100 year existence. Not only do I wish to showcase this rag doll duo I would love to present their long history and story of their creator Johnny Gruelle.
I am fairly known in the Raggedy "community" and I would love to help keep the nostalgia and story of Raggedy Ann & Andy and their creator alive and well and introduce a whole new generation to these truly AMERICAN toys and characters.
Thank you for taking the time to read all that I have said. I am hoping you can help me ensure the hopes and dreams I have for this building and property. please help me NOT to loose this historic home and the pied story that has gone on with in these Antique walls.
