Former WWII pilot relives kamikaze call that never came

In August 1945, Tatsukuma Ueno was a 17-year-old army pilot at Tachiarai Airfield in southwestern Japan’s Fukuoka Prefecture.

There he awaited the go-ahead for a desperate attack, after repeatedly being passed over for “kamikaze” suicide missions.

80 years on from the end of World War II, Ueno reflects on his training during the conflict’s final stages, and how he and other young pilots were prepared to pay the ultimate price for Japan.
