Books like the 10X Rule talk about making massive changes, having big differences, taking incredibly high levels of action to get big results.

With previous responsibilities and where someone is currently, this can get in the way, this can become a problem.

What is the solution, what can someone do to work around what is currently going on and be able to shift in a different direction.

Solution, make slightly better decisions. Not massively different decisions.

This is how I quit smoking cigarettes. Knowing it was bad to do, I made a rule, smoke one less a day. It started by figuring out how many cigarettes were being smoked every day.

Then it turned into only bringing the amount that I had planned to smoke, no more, no less. The exact amount. While being at the peak of my smoking habit in an education program, I had a group of friends that also smoked, we shared cigarettes at times.

Over time, I graduated and stopped being around the same friends and in fact, I didn’t hang out with anyone who did smoke. In between my years of smoking, I also picked up the harmonica and started to play that, oddly enough, the harmonica delivers some of the same routines that someone will do while smoking.

It involves fingers to mouth movement, inhaling; and the breath motions made by breathing like that from harmonica also delivers a similar “head high” type of feeling one gets from smoking cigarettes.

Multiple things helped me quit this:

There was an active decision of quitting or doing something better
I made myself reduce by one on a regular basis and only brought that amount with me
The friends I made while smoking were absent.
I played the harmonica.

In reality, I never really quit smoking cigarettes, I simply found better options. Over time, these decisions turn into actions and these actions give us certain results in our lives; good or bad.

This one rule of making slightly better decisions can also be found in Charles Duhigg's book, “The Power of Habit” and is called the Golden Rule of Habit Change.
