Making Wall Segments for the Chilterns Tunnel

At the South Portal of the Chilterns tunnel, two vast factories are manufacturing the concrete wall segments that form the lining of the tunnels. Watch and find out how the 112,000 segments are made, stored and transported by two giant gantry cranes. Manufacturing at the portal site helps avoid putting extra lorries on local roads.
We use Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs) to excavate tunnels through a variety of soil and rock to reduce environmental impacts in rural areas. The first of these TBMs, Florence, was launched in May 2021 and is digging one of the bores of the 10-mile-long Chiltern tunnel.
