Quel 6 aprile del ’44: Autodramma as Embodied Cognitive Microhistory

The play Quel 6 aprile del ’44 commemorates a battle between Italian resistance fighters and the republican militia, as well as a narrowly avoided massacre of the townspeople of Monticchiello by a squad of SS soldiers during WWII. First performed in 1969, this play was the inaugural autodramma presented by the Teatro Povero di Monticchiello, a Tuscan theater company that has been writing and producing its own "self-dramas” for more than 50 years. By applying the interpretive framework of Embodied Cognitive Microhistory, this talk will explore Quel 6 aprile as a site-specific performance that converted the traumas of war into an unforgettable art form.

Hannah C. Wojciehowski is an early modernist and literary theorist specialized in the history of subjectivity. She earned her Ph.D. at Yale University in the interdisciplinary Renaissance Studies Program. She is currently the Arthur J. Thaman and Wilhelmina Doré Thaman Professor of English at the University of Texas, and an Affiliate of the Program in Comparative Literature and of the South Asia Institute. She recently edited Shakespeare’s Cymbeline for the New Kittredge Shakespeare Series. In 2011 she published the book Group Identity in the Renaissance World where she explored the history of "group subjectivity”, analyzing the unconscious dynamics of group identity formation in a global context, offering a new paradigm for the study of early modernity. She has been an international leader in the literature and neuroscience debate for years.
