En septiembre de 1994, para el año modelo 1995, Toyota introdujo un Tercel totalmente nuevo. El Tercel nueva lucía un exterior completamente rediseñado y un nuevo motor. También hubo una versión hatchback de 3 puertas del cuerpo que ofrece además del sedán de cuatro puertas. El sedán de dos puertas, solo fue comercializado en América del Norte.

El interior hizo hincapié en un entorno fácil de usar, empujando el tablero más lejos, pero con lo que los conmutadores más cercanos, que dieron los pasajeros una sensación de amplitud y confort. El nuevo DOHC de 1,5 L motor I4 proporcionan 93 CV. El Tercel también estaba disponible con el más pequeño de 1.3 litros 4E-FE de gasolina de cuatro cilindros y el motor Toyota 1N-T, un 1.453 cc y cuatro en línea de motores diésel con turbocompresor que proporciona 66 CV.

Para 1998, el Tercel recibió un estilo actualizado, destacó por los nuevos faros multi-reflectores, parrilla y el diseño revisado fascia delantera y claras luces de giro de la lente de la señal para la parte delantera y trasera. El cambio de máscara se produjo en diciembre de 1997 para el mercado japonés, y afectaron a las tres líneas (Tercel, Corsa, Corolla II).

La quinta generación de Tercel fue presentado en noviembre de 1994, presentado en el Salon del Automóvil de ese año como el "All New Tercel Twin Cam". El coche era revolucionario a ese mercado en el momento, y fue elegido Coche del Año en Chile. Fue un gran éxito, convirtiéndose en el segundo coche más vendido en Chile durante cuatro años. In September 1994, for the 1995 model year, Toyota introduced a brand new Tercel. The new Tercel sported a completely redesigned exterior and a new engine. There was also a 3-door hatchback version of the body that offered in addition to the four-door sedan. The two-door sedan was only marketed in North America.

The interior emphasized a user-friendly environment, pushing the dash further, but bringing closer switches, which gave passengers a feeling of spaciousness and comfort. The new 1.5L DOHC I4 engine provides 93 hp. The Tercel was also available with the smaller 1.3-liter 4E-FE four-cylinder gasoline and Toyota 1N-T engine, a 1,453 cc and four in-line turbocharged diesel engines providing 66 bhp.

For 1998, the Tercel received updated styling, highlighted by new multi-reflector headlights, grille, and revised front fascia design and clear signal lens turn signals for the front and rear. The mask change occurred in December 1997 for the Japanese market, and affected all three lines (Tercel, Corsa, Corolla II).

The fifth generation of Tercel was introduced in November 1994, presented at the Auto Show that year as the "All New Tercel Twin Cam". The car was revolutionary to that market at the time, and was voted Car of the Year in Chile. It was a great success, making it the second best-selling car in Chile for four years. In 2000 the sale and production of the Tercel ceased to be replaced by the Toyota Yaris.
