The Hawker Hurricane was Britain’s first monoplane fighter and the unsung hero of the Battle of Britain. Designed by Sydney Camm and first flown in 1935, it combined a modern retractable undercarriage and eight .303-inch Browning machine guns with a traditional steel-tube and fabric-covered fuselage — rugged, easy to repair, and forgiving to fly. Powered by the Rolls-Royce Merlin engine, the Hurricane could reach over 330 mph and climb rapidly to intercept enemy bombers. Though overshadowed by the sleeker Spitfire, the Hurricane actually destroyed more enemy aircraft during the Battle of Britain than all other defenses combined — nearly 60 percent of total kills. It served in every major theatre of the war, evolving through cannon-armed, fighter-bomber, and naval “Sea Hurricane” variants. Reliable, adaptable, and immensely durable, the Hurricane became the backbone of RAF Fighter Command in its darkest hour — the workhorse that saved Britain.
