Subject and Predicate - English Language / Grammar Chapter 3, ICSE Class 8

Every sentence is a group of words that makes complete sense and is divided into two primary parts: the subject and the predicate.

The subject is the person, place, thing, or idea that is being talked about or performing an action, while the predicate is the specific part of the sentence that tells us something about that subject. For example, in the sentence "Amanpreet is good at tennis," "Amanpreet" is the subject because he is the person we are discussing, and "is good at tennis" is the predicate because it describes him.
While a subject can be a single word, it often contains several words centered around a subject word, which is always a noun.

This subject word is frequently modified by an attribute, which is an adjective or a group of words—such as articles, participial adjectives, or noun phrases—that describes the noun. For instance, in the sentence "The speeding train made a lot of noise," the subject word is "train," while "the" and "speeding" act as its attributes.


The predicate's most important feature is that it must always contain a finite verb, though it can consist of one word or a whole group of words. In many sentences, the verb in the predicate is further explained by an adverbial qualification, which functions like an adverb to provide more detail. This qualification can be a single adverb, an infinitive phrase, or a prepositional phrase, such as in the sentence "The birds chirped in the garden," where "in the garden" tells us where the action happened.

Analogy To remember how a sentence works, think of it like a branded car: the subject word is the car itself (the noun), the attributes are the specific color or model details that describe it, and the predicate is the engine and the movement that tells you exactly what the car is doing.
