Welcome to Archinest! Today, we're diving into the architectural elegance of Eyrie House, a residence perched dramatically on the steep slopes of Mount Rumney, Tasmania. Designed by Matt Williams Architects, this 228-square-meter home harmoniously blends modern design with breathtaking natural landscapes, creating a true architectural statement overlooking the serene Pittwater and southeastern Tasmania.
From the outset, Eyrie House stands out for its unique inverted design, driven by the steep terrain and challenging access. Unlike traditional hill houses, the entry point and garage are positioned at the top level, with living spaces gracefully extending below. This inverted structure allows residents to enjoy a seamless entry from above, leading to a space that unfolds across clean, horizontal planes.
One of the defining features of Eyrie House is its use of GB Masonry blocks in a Porcelain Smooth finish. These materials, selected for their precision and matte uniformity, allowed Saxby Bricklaying to execute intricate, millimeter-perfect horizontal and vertical patterns, lending the home a crisp yet understated aesthetic. The blocks are carefully mitered to form sharp pleated angles in the entryway, enhancing the monolithic look while retaining an inviting softness.
Inside, the masonry blockwork provides more than visual impact—it establishes a calming, grounded backdrop that draws attention to the sweeping views outside. The interior’s smooth, natural finish complements the rugged textures of Tasmania’s landscape, creating a tranquil yet striking environment. Large windows frame expansive views, ensuring the surrounding scenery takes center stage.
Join us as we explore this remarkable hillside home that challenges conventional design while embracing the breathtaking beauty of its location. From its minimalist, folded forms to its impressive brickwork, Eyrie House by Matt Williams Architects is a stunning example of architecture designed to both complement and enhance the landscape around it.
