In this English Pronunciation tutorial, you’re going to learn the 6 different linking sound possibilities that can occur when a word ends in a consonant and starts with a consonant.

We’ve already looked at consonant + consonant linking sounds in another tutorial (   • Linking Sound - Consonant + Consonant (DO ...  ) and in this tutorial we are going to build on it by looking at the 6 different possible combinations of consonant + consonant linking sounds.

We are going to break consonant sounds into 2 types - plosive and non-plosive consonants.
Every consonant is made by 2 parts of the vocal structure coming together to stop or constrict air flow e.g lip to teeth /f/ (labiodental) and tongue to teeth /θ/ (dental). For consonant + consonant linking sounds, we can break regions of the mouth into 2 types, similar, and dissimilar. By combining these 2 types of regions - similar and dissimilar, with the 2 types of consonants - plosive and non-plosive, you get 6 different possibilities:

You're now going to learn all 6 possibilities, with examples for each one. I’m going to explain what happens with each possibility in a simple 3 step process:

Possibilities for 2 linking consonant sounds originating from the same or similar parts of the mouth:
Plosive + Plosive = Bob Brought
Mouth moves to position of first consonant but doesn't make it.
Airflow stops temporarily in this position
Second consonant (only) is pronounced.

Plosive + Non-plosive = Dead Zone
Mouth moves to position of first consonant but doesn't make it.
Airflow stops temporarily in consonant position 1
Second consonant (only) is pronounced.

Non-plosive + Non-plosive = She’s Singing
2 words pronounced as one
Airflow continues
Second word becomes stressed on first syllable, and only the second consonant is pronounced

Possibilities for 2 linking consonant sounds originating from different parts of the mouth:
Plosive + Plosive = Bag Burst
Mouth moves to position of first consonant but doesn't make it.
Airflow stops temporarily in this position
Second consonant (only) is pronounced.

Non-plosive + Plosive = Seems Big
Both consonants pronounced, second consonant stressed
Pronounce first consonant
Mouth moves to pronounce second (plosive) consonant. Airflow stops temporarily because the second consonant is plosive.
Second consonant is pronounced

Non-plosive + Non-Plosive = Girls New
Both Consonants pronounced
Pronounce first consonant
Move mouth to position of second consonant. Airflow continues as neither sound is plosive
Make second consonant sound.
