Esteemed alumnus Dr. James Sylvester Braxton '37 was the second Black student to graduate from Stevens, after Randolph Montrose Smith, '24. Braxton was one of the most active members of his class and in 1937 he pledged and was admitted to the Jersey City chapter of the prestigious African American fraternity, Alpha Phi Alpha, 82 years before a chapter was established at Stevens! Braxton went on to achieve great success after Stevens , during a time when Black engineers had limited opportunities and were few in numbers. In this talk we delve deeper into Braxton's fascinating life and accomplishments while pulling interesting archival documents from the newly acquired James Braxton Papers. This new collection has provided further insight into Braxton's life, career, involvement with the civil rights movement, and his lifelong interest in building affordable housing for a more equitable society. A panel discussion follows a brief slide presentation.
*Please note that in slide #4 the bottom right image should say "Braxton Block" prototype and not "Lok-in."
Panelists: DuJaun Kirk '20, Mrs. Virginia Braxton, Joshua Hector '22, Kobe Dawes '21, Joelle Hinds '93, Emory Brown III, Dr. Lindsey Swindall, Leah Loscutoff.
