Rachel Reeves is under pressure to resign after being accused of inventing a £30bn “black hole” to justify big tax rises.
OBR letters show the gap was only £2.5bn in September and had turned into a £4.2bn surplus by late October, before Reeves continued warning the public about a major financial crisis.
Despite this, she pushed ahead with £26bn in tax hikes and scrapped the two-child benefit cap.
Critics, including Kemi Badenoch and Richard Tice, say she misled the country and created fear to support her plans.
A former IFS chief also said her warnings were “misleading.”
Downing Street denies she misled anyone, but has not explained why she kept talking about a huge gap after being told it no longer existed.
New figures also show public sector pay and benefits have grown faster than private sector wages under Labour.
