Fort Kochi: An Indian beach town like no other

If you’re looking for a charming colonial town integral to the history of India’s Arabian Sea coast you could do no better than Fort Kochi.

This administrative district within the greater city of Kochi is not merely a fort, although there’s the remnant of an early Portuguese fort here, Fort Emmanual.

Fort Kochi lies on an island and a very significant one at that—a place that was a seafaring center long before the Portuguese arrived in the early 1500s. The great navigator Vasco Da Gama was laid to rest inside Saint Frances Church here in 1524 (his body was moved to Portugal 14 years later).

One can visit the nearby community of Mattancherry, home to the last of southern India’s pre-colonial kingdoms and which became an early entrepot for immigrants, especially Jews. Paradesi Synagogue in the town’s old Jewish Quarter, built in 1568, still functions as a place of worship.

Along the Fort Kochi shorefront one can see fishermen still using giant shore-based Chinese fishing nets to haul in their catch as they have for centuries here.
