Abbiamo speso troppo per dormire bene… ma il vero spettacolo è là fuori, dove dorme la savana. 🌅

A Omaruru, la vivace cittadina di passaggio sulla rotta del Damaraland, sostiamo per una notte in un confortevole lodge. Ci concediamo quest’ultimo lusso prima di avventurarci nel Parco Nazionale dell’Etosha, dove non sappiamo bene cosa ci aspetterà.

Con i suoi quasi 23 mila chilometri quadrati, l’Etosha National Park comprende savana, foresta, aride pianure assolate e distese di cespugli spinosi. C’è anche un magico deserto, il pan, un basso specchio d’acqua incrostato di sale che riflette la luce creando effetti irreali.

Etosha, nella lingua locale, significa “grande luogo bianco”. Ma i colori più vividi si accendono all’alba e al tramonto, quando decine di animali si dirigono verso le pozze d’acqua o nei pressi dei lodge. Basta appostarsi ed aspettare: elefanti, zebre, gazzelle, giraffe, bufali, antilopi, facoceri e qualche raro rinoceronte nero a rischio d’estinzione.

E dove ci sono le prede, arrivano anche i predatori: leoni, ghepardi e leopardi.
Viaggeremo al risparmio, ma non per questo l’esperienza della leggendaria riserva protetta nazionale della Namibia sarà meno intensa.

Anzi, vivremo ancora più a stretto contatto con la fauna africana.
E solo a vederli muoversi liberi nella savana si può desiderare tanto di proteggerli — per regalare alle future generazioni la fortuna di assistere allo spettacolo di qualche giornata (e nottata) vissute nel bush africano. 🌙

We spent too much to sleep well… but the real show is out there, where the savannah sleeps. 🌅
We saved €1400 skipping lodges — and found the wildest Africa instead. 🐘

In Omaruru, a lively stopover town on the way to Damaraland, we spend one night in a cosy lodge — our last touch of luxury before venturing into Etosha National Park, unsure of what awaits us.

Covering almost 23,000 square kilometres, Etosha encompasses savannahs, forests, sunburnt plains, and thorny bushland. At its heart lies the Etosha Pan, a shimmering salt flat that mirrors the light, creating surreal landscapes.

In the local language, Etosha means “great white place”. Yet the most vivid colours appear at sunrise and sunset, when herds of animals gather around the waterholes: elephants, zebras, gazelles, giraffes, buffalos, antelopes, warthogs — and the rare black rhino, sadly endangered.

Where there are prey, there are predators too: lions, cheetahs, and leopards.
We may be travelling on a budget, but our journey through Namibia’s legendary reserve will be no less thrilling.

Seeing wildlife roam free is the greatest reason to protect it — for the privilege of witnessing life in the bush, under the vast African sky. 🌍
