James Scott, 1st Duke of Monmouth always claimed to be the legitimate and rightful heir to the throne following Charles II death.
He opposed James I who the throne was passed to and faced him at The Battle of Sedgwick. After losing the battle James Scott was then transported to The Tower of London where he was beheaded in London’s bloodiest execution.
After he was beheaded it was noted by the constable of The Tower of London that James Scott’s portrait had never been painted and that it needed to be for historical purposes as all nobility had their portrait painted so their legancy could be preserved.
He demanded that James Scott be dug out from the ground, his head re-attached and an artist was given just 24 hours to complete the task.
If you ever visit the national portrait gallery you’ll noted the peculiar look on his face. This was due to him being beheaded a few days beforehand. #londonhistory #findthegap
