Chinese Hokkien's biggest celebration in Chinese New Year is praying to Jade Emperor or Pai Ti Kong on the 9th lunar day. The most important offering is the Ti Kong Kim or gold joss paper that is folded into the shape of ancient gold ingots. Every year, I will buy the stacks of gold joss paper and fold them into gold ingots at home. It is an activity the whole family can sit to do together and children are able to learn the traditional method and skills in folding joss paper gold ingots.
All the folded Ti Kong Kim is bundled up and kept until the lunar 8th night and opened up when we want to burn it as an offering to Jade Emperor (Ti Kong). Praying to Jade Emperor is done at exact start of the 9th day, meaning we got all the food and offerings ready on the table at midnight and start praying when the clock strikes 00.00 am.
Firecrackers are lit, and it is a joyous and bright night when rows of houses of Hokkien Dialects put out the tables in front of their houses to pray.
After praying, all the joss paper gold ingot, boats, and other peripherals are burn as offering to Jade Emperor (Ti Kong) for better luck, an abundance of fortune, health for the coming new year.
