The 1832 hymn "Holy, Holy, Holy Lord", to the tune "Stainforth" by Robert Jackson (1840-1914) as set in the "Baptist Church Hymnal" (1900), no. 24 (first tune), played by Peter Tylor on the 1909 Hele pipe organ at St Mewan Church near St Austell, Cornwall (NPOR D08358), 30/07/2025.
Holy, Holy, Holy Lord
God of Hosts, when heaven and earth
Out of darkness at Thy word,
Issued into glorious birth,
All Thy works before Thee stood,
And Thine eye beheld them good;
While they sang with sweet accord,
Holy, Holy, Holy Lord!
Holy, Holy, Holy! Thee,
One Jehovah evermore,
Father, Son, and Spirit, we,
Dust and ashes, would adore:
Lightly by the world esteemed,
From that world by Thee redeemed,
Sing we here with glad accord,
Holy, Holy, Holy Lord!
Holy, Holy, Holy! all
Heaven's triumphant choirs shall sing,
When the ransomed nations fall
At the footstool of their King:
Then shall saints and seraphim,
Harps and voices, swell one hymn,
Blending in sublime accord,
Holy, Holy, Holy Lord! Amen.
(Words by James Montgomery, 1771-1854)
This is the first of two tunes called "Stainforth" that I recorded soon after Stephen Irvine uploaded some videos that he did at St Peter's Church, Stainforth, near Settle, North Yorkshire - one of these is at • Jesus is Lord, Creation's voice Proclaims ...
As Stephen pointed out, there are in fact two Stainforths, the other one being near Doncaster in South Yorkshire. Since Robert Jackson - a native and near-lifelong resident of Oldham - named most of his tunes (including the well-known "Trentham") after places in various parts of England, he could potentially have named this one after either Stainforth. However, I think it more likely that it relates to the one near Settle, on the grounds that one of Jackson's other tunes is called "Wensley", and the village of Wensley is closer to Settle than, as far as I am aware, any of the places after which his other tunes are named are to Doncaster.
