I saw that someone has already translated the entire musical to English now, so I will probably only upload my fave songs, and you can let me know if you have requests.
The musical Gambämark (2018) by KAJ tells the story of the fictional village of Gambämark in Ostrobothnia, separated from the outside world by a wall since 15 years. Kurt Byman (Axel Åhman), the leader of the community, believes that things used to be better in the past and that the community must live the way they always have, without the modern influence of the outside. Meanwhile his son, Josua (Jakob Norrgård) dreams of progress and to break free from the confines of the village with its traditional and narrow way of thinking. A rift is created when the villagers start plotting to overthrow the patriarch and Josua's vision of modernization clashes with Kurt's old-fashioned beliefs.
Some translations:
1. 'Hitton litton' – a kind of nonsensical exclamation that has no literal English translation
2. 'Talko' – 'communal work' the process where a group of people in a village or community work together to achieve a common goal for the benefit of everyone
3.' Vatupass' – 'spirit level' in English, an instrument designed to indicate whether a surface is horizontal
4. 'Hemmanet Skinntöijar' – didn't come up with a good translation for this but this term 'hemman' (dialectal; heimani, like in 'heimani i skick') comes from the 1500's and used to refer to a independently own property, usually a farm. In modern times the term has given birth to the phrase 'hemma från' (hail from/have their home in) that people (read: people from the Finnish-Swedish countryside) use. Fx 'ja e hemma från Maxmo' = I come from Maxmo
5. The literal translation of Kurt Byman is 'Kurt Villageman'
6. 'Kalvdans' = (literal translation ' calf dance') a classical Scandinavian dessert made from unpasteurized colostrum milk, the first milk produced by a cow after giving birth
7. 'Gålabåokin' (Gårdsboken in Swedish) = my translation "Hometown codex" = the 'holy bible' of the village that lists all its laws and rules
KAJ sings in a Finnish-Swedish dialect spoken in the town of Vörå in Finland. Their lyrics are full of dialectal plays on words and other quirks, but I do my best to translate them where it's possible
