commentary: marchais's comments, at a news conference, followed warnings by us secretary of state henry kissinger and general alexander haig, supreme commander of nato, and an american. a similar statement has also been made by west german chancellor helmut schmidt. marchais, general secretary of the french communist party, said that if the united states was trying to prevent french and italian communists taking part in their governments, this was an intolerable kind of pressure. he added this was part of an american attempt to break the union of the left in france. two years ago, french socialists and communists banded together under socialist francois mitterand. the alliance came within a percentage point of winning the french presidency in elections. marchais said it had just been revealed that us diplomats came to paris for talks with mitterand at the end of january. he cited this as further evidence of a us move to break the unity of the french left. marchais also criticized soviet communists. he said decisions taken by the french communist party could not be disputed in moscow, washington, bonn or anywhere else. marchais has criticized what he called a lack of civil liberties in the soviet union. he did not lead his party's delegation to the soviet communist party congress in moscow which ends on friday
