Convicted Murderer Turned Prison Minister – Gerardo Hidalgo – A Grace Encounter

Gerardo Hidalgo chose a destructive path early on in life. As a young boy, Gerardo witnessed the bloody aftermath of his father getting beat up by some thugs trying to take his wallet. The experience left him bitter, angry and headed down a dark path. Growing up in the dangerous projects of New Orleans, he chose violence to get what he wanted and to prevent losing what little he had.

One fateful night, Gerardo went out with a friend to buy some alcohol. In the parking lot, Gerardo’s friend opened his car door and hit another car with it. A fight broke out between Gerardo and the people in the other car. Gerardo saw his friend get hit, pulled out his gun, and pulled the trigger shooting multiple people. Gerardo fled the scene and threw his gun into a canal, unable to get away as the police surrounded him. The police arrested him shortly after.
Gerardo faced the death penalty for 2 counts of first-degree murder in 1993. The case went to trial and Gerardo received a manslaughter conviction. Sentenced to 15 years in prison for manslaughter and 7.5 years in prison for each attempted manslaughter, Gerardo began to serve his time.

On his third day in jail God made himself real to Gerardo. A revelation from God hit Gerardo telling him that God is holy, and that he was a sinner. Gerardo put faith in the fact that Jesus died for him for the first time while sitting in his cell. He struggled, confused by why God would forgive him for of all the shooting and stealing he’d done. Hungry for knowledge and truth in his new faith, a friend in prison introduced Gerardo to Andrew Wommack.

Thanks to Andrew's partners, Gerardo found out that while in prison he could receive 3 free tapes a week from Andrew Wommack Ministries. Studying the word of God and hearing Andrew’s teachings during his time in prison radically changed Gerardo’s life. Gerardo got out of prison and went from prisoner to partner to minister. Today, Gerardo is a prison minister, faithful husband, devoted father, and residential building contractor in New Orleans, LA.
