Many railroad lines have "horseshoe curves". Almost always the reason is to climb mountain grades using a track curvature of 180 degrees, give or take. At Pavilion, British Columbia, BC Rail in its effort to climb out of the rugged and steep Fraser River Canyon, was a great sight in June, 1987, when MLW power was still quite common! This northbound has a pair of M630s leading and a M630W / M630 being used as mid-train remote helpers.
