Namtso Lake, or “lake of heaven”, in China’s Tibet autonomous region is home to a treasure trove of ancient cave paintings. From vivid portrayals of wild animals to inscriptions of ancient Tibetan language, they offer a glimpse into the early nomadic culture of the plateau. Chinese researchers are using various scientific techniques to date the rock paintings and unveil some of the mysteries of the prehistoric art.
