4 नवंबर को घाटशिला उपचुनाव के नतीजे आए तो झामुमो के सोमेशचंद्र सोरेन को 38,602 वोट से जीत मिली थी. इतने भारी अंतर से हार के बाद हमें लगा था कि बीजेपी दफ्तर में मातम होगा. हार का बुखार पार्टी के नेताओं और कार्यकर्ताओं के सिर चढ़कर बोल रहा होगा. नेता चिंतन में डूबे होंगे और कार्यकर्ता मंथन में. हाल ही में विधानसभा चुनाव में केवल 22 सीटों पर सिमटने के बाद अब घाटशिला में घातक हार से झारखंड बीजेपी का कमल कुम्हला गया होगा लेकिन ये क्या. हरमू में बीजेपी दफ्तर में तो जश्न था. पटाखे छूट रहे थे. फूलझड़ियां चल रही थी. रंग-गुलाल उड़ रहे थे और ढोल, नगाड़े की धुन में क्या नेता और क्या कार्यकर्ता, ताल से ताल मिलाकर भरदम नाच रहे थे. हमें लगा कि शायद घाटशिला की हार से उबरने के लिए पार्टी नेतृत्व का कोई टास्क है लेकिन ना! पता चला कि यहां बिहार में एनडीए की जीत का जश्न मनाया जा रहा है. निसंदेह बिहार में बीजेपी को 89 सीटों पर जीत मिली. एनडीए ने 202 सीट जीतकर प्रचंड जनादेश हासिल हुआ लेकिन हम समझने में लगे थे कि झारखंड बीजेपी ने क्या पाया. जवाब मिला..इत्ती से हंसी...इत्ती सी खुशी...इतना सा टुकड़ा हार का. घुसपैठ के मुद्दे पर हम ख्वाब देखें सरकार का. हमने भी सोचा. वाह! क्या बात है. वैरी गुड. कुल जमा बात ये है कि वहां पार्टी से जुड़े किसी भी व्यक्ति के चेहरे पर घाटशिला गंवाने का न तो गम था और ना ही शर्म. वो भी तब जबकि हमने बीजेपी में ऐसी स्किम के बारे में नहीं सुना कि पड़ोसी राज्य में पार्टी की जीत पर जश्न मना लेने भर से झारखंड बीजेपी के नेताओं का करियर सुरक्षित हो जायेगा.


When the Ghatsila by-election results were announced on November 4th, JMM's Someshchandra Soren won by 38,602 votes. After losing by such a huge margin, we expected the BJP office to be in mourning. The fever of defeat must have gripped the party's leaders and workers. Leaders must have been immersed in contemplation, and workers in deep thought. After being reduced to just 22 seats in the recent assembly elections, the devastating defeat in Ghatsila must have dented the Jharkhand BJP's lotus. But what was this? There was celebration at the BJP office in Harmu. Firecrackers were bursting, sparklers were being set off, colors were flying, and to the beat of drums and trumpets, both leaders and workers danced in unison. We thought the party leadership might have had a task to overcome the Ghatsila defeat, but no! We discovered that the NDA's victory in Bihar was being celebrated. Undoubtedly, the BJP won 89 seats in Bihar. The NDA secured a landslide mandate by winning 202 seats, but we were trying to understand what the Jharkhand BJP had achieved. The answer was...so much laughter...so much joy...so little defeat. We should dream of a government on the issue of infiltration. We also thought, Wow! What a thing! Very good. The bottom line is that no one associated with the party there showed any sadness or shame over losing Ghatsila. This is even though we hadn't heard of any scheme within the BJP that would secure the careers of Jharkhand BJP leaders simply by celebrating the party's victory in a neighboring state.
What has the Jharkhand BJP done in the last six years? It lost six by-elections. It lost all five tribal Lok Sabha seats. In the assembly elections, it was reduced to only 22 seats, and it lost 27 of the 28 ST reserved seats. The party has been unable to find a full-time state president since the assembly elections. The reputations of stalwarts like Babulal Marandi, Arjun Munda, Champai Soren, and Raghuvar Das are at stake, but the Jharkhand BJP's heart is unconvinced. They are content to celebrate the party's victories in neighboring states. The Jharkhand BJP has risen above all attachments. It seems it has nothing left to lose, and nothing to gain.
