So it’s not everyday that you see switchers hauling ass on the mainline, but here we are in 2024. To the delight of many and when I say many I mean everyone and their grandmother took great interest in seeing Amtrak’s “Portland Extra” equipment shuttle with AMTK 537 (MP15DC) leading the way up in the night and then again here on the westbound trip back to Boston with a slice of the pie in Amtrak equipment variety. Amtrak utilizes their switchers mainly for what they were built for, switching in rail yard facilities and shuffling cars around. However, the “shuffle” in this case was much different as many got the spectacular opportunity to document this locomotive move at speed down the mainline on Amtrak’s Downeaster route/EX Pan Am Railways District 2 mainline from Brunswick, Maine to Boston, MA.
