• The word ‘alpa’ means less. The swars which are less in usage and importance or are omitted in a Jaati are known as Alpatva. There are of two types of Alpatva swars – Langhan Alpatva and Anabhyasa Alpatva.
• Bahutva is when a swar is given a prime place or is often repeated (vadi swar) in a Jaati. There are two types of Bahutva - Alanghan Bahutva and Abhyaas Bahutva. There are of two types of Alpatva swars – Langhan Alpatva and Anabhyasa Alpatva.
• Even if its not the most important swar of the raag or the vaadi swar, the swar on which a large timing is fixed will be called Bahutva. Like in the Desh raga, it is mandatory to stay on the re while performing .ni sa re ma ga re. The ragas in which those who get the importance even without use of the nyaas or vaadi swar are called Bahutva.
• There are two types of Bahutva - Alanghan
Bahutva and Abhyaas Bahutva.
