“It’s been very very drastic, people are scared, people are being arrested people are breaking up their relationships because LGBTQ, people are going back into the closets, it’s a lot like you had me talking to my friend on phone. People are being arrested from their homes and then for me since the bill was passed I haven’t slept I can assure you I have not.”

“I am so glad I am very happy for what the parliament has passed because those are the prayers we have been having in our society so that that thing can not be explored like it cannot be expanded, people to get into that thing because it is not right for the society even for our children, our kids even our youth because we have seen they had not yet passed it through the law but we have seen already the effects of the homosexuals we thank and we are glad that our prayers was answered by God.”

“For us this means death. This means persecution. Like you could just be there sitting in your house and some one comes and knocks and says we know you are gay come we are taking you to prison, so this for us is like very damming and we ask that the powers that be try and respect our privacy and repeal this whole thing because it is not realistic.”

STORYLINE:
People in Uganda have been reacting to the passing of a new law making it a crime to identify as LGBTQ.
The law that passed on Tuesday hands authorities broad powers to target gay Ugandans who already face discrimination and violence.
Phyllis Wanjiru, a member of the LGBTQ community and an activist said: “For us this means death. This means persecution.”
