In this video I break down how I connect the Roland SP-404 to an Audio Interface to record beats / live sets into my DAW. I have a few tricks on how I get the best signal-to-noise ratio, meaning I have the beat as loud as I can get it with as little of the sp404 background buzz and hiss as possible.
Hope this comes in handy, this is something y'all ask me about often n I hate that damn buzz noise.
The interface I'm using is a Tascam US-322. I've had it for a while, it's been reliable, powered via USB and is really portable. Real cheap too. Also, discontinued. My main interface I use is a M-Audio Air 192|14 and it is a TANK.
If you're looking for recommendations on interfaces I'd say it's worth getting something like the Focusrite Scarlett 4i4 because it has 4 inputs and 4 outputs.
4 inputs means you can record an sp404 and a guitar or vocals or po33 or another sp etc....at the same time.
4 outputs is fun. Something I do a lot which I'll make a video on if you guys are interested is how I use the sp202 / sp303 / sp404 in Reason (any DAW this would work). A quick example: I make a beat in Reason, I have all my drums in a Kong and I have my sample in a Dr. Octo Rex - this Rex channel I assign to OUTPUTS 3/4 which goes to the sp404's LINE IN, I then connect the sp404's LINE OUT into my interface's INPUTS 1/2 which is recording on a new track in Reason. I can now do DJFX Looper and MFX on the sample layer independent of the Drums in Real Time as Reason plays the beat.
I'm curious what audio interface you all use so let me know in the comments!
And, as always, if I wanna know more about this, just get at me.
