I've been wanting to try out a 360 camera for a while now. I picked up a GoPro MAX a while ago and have played around with it a bit. Most of the footage I shoot for my videos is done with my GoPro HERO 8, so I decided it was time to put my new 360 GoPro to the test and see how it compares. This video was shot completely on the GoPro MAX and it shows some of the different types of shots you can get with the GoPro MAX. The GoPro MAX has two lenses on it, one on either side of the camera, which help it to be able to shoot in 360 (all directions) mode.
A cool feature of the GoPro MAX is you can use each lens independently of each other. So I can use just the front lens or just the back lens in "Hero" mode, which is similar to a regular GoPro camera. The downside of using the camera in Hero mode, is that there is no slow-mo, like the other HERO cameras. You can also only shoot up to 1080 | 60 fps on the GoPro MAX in Hero mode, which is quite a bit less than my GoPro HERO 8 that can do 4K | 60 fps.
The GoPro MAX also has Time Lapse features. It can do a TimeWarp (what I used in this video) or a TimeLapse. Both types are similar but TimeWarp has some cool capabilities that I won't go into details of here. Similar to Hero mode, the GoPro MAX can only do time lapses up to 1080. My GoPro HERO 8 can shoot time lapses at 4K. The GoPro MAX also does not have a night lapse mode, which the HERO 8 has.
The GoPro MAX has picture mode, however I typically just use my phone for pictures, so I don't have much to say on that feature.
The main reason to get a GoPro MAX is for the 360 mode. In 360 mode, you can shoot in 5.6K | 30 fps or 3K | 60 fps (there is also an option for 24 fps). I use 5.6K | 30 fps for this video. After shooting the 360 footage you can use GoPro's editing app to reframe and crop the video in whatever angle your want. This allows for a much wider angle than the widest lens angle on my HERO 8. I've tried getting helmet POV shots with my HERO 8 before, and the footage didn't really turn out very good because you either couldn't see me or you couldn't see where I was going. With the GoPro MAX you can easily frame the video with a wider angle to see anything and everything you want.
The other cool thing you can do with the GoPro MAX is the invisible selfie stick shot. I think the shots I took for this video turned out pretty good. You can't see the selfie stick I am using at all, and the stitch line from the two lenses isn't very noticeable. I have seen a mixed result so far with how well the stitch line comes together. From the few times I have tried it, it seems like when the sky and ground are both white, like in this video, the stitch line stitches together really well and isn't too visible. However I have had issues when it's bright outside where the stitch line looks pretty bad. I'll have to test it out in a few more scenarios to see if I can figure out what makes it work or not work.
Overall I think I like the GoPro MAX. It allows me to get some cool angles and shots that are not possible without a 360 camera. I do wish that the Hero mode and times lapse modes had all the same options as my HERO 8, so that I didn't have to pack two separate cameras to get the best footage. I also wish I could capture 360 footage in a higher frame-rate/resolution so that I end up with a higher resolution video after cropping it. Hopefully you enjoyed this video and my thoughts on the GoPro MAX. I look forward to testing it out more and seeing what type of cool shots I can come up with.
