West Point Organist Craig Williams plays "An Occasional Fanfare" by Grimoaldo Macchia (b. 1972). Macchia is a very prolific composer of works for organ, and also vocal, orchestral, and chamber works. He has won composition competitions, including Dudelange (Luxembourg) in 2022. Whereas he enjoys improvising on hymns, chants, and chorales in various historical styles, all imprinted with his own personality and harmonic language, this "An Occasional Fanfare" is a free piece playing the heroic trumpets of the organ against the principal choruses. The freedom in rhythm, derived from frequent time signature changes, may be a nod to "An Occasional Trumpet Voluntary" by Patrick Gowers, though this piece is bolder in its dynamic approach and daring fistfuls of chords and rapid pedal runs - sometimes with double pedal! Macchia's pieces in this style work very well on the West Point Cadet Chapel Organ, with the Harmonic Division reeds (Ophicleide and Tuba Sonora) and Trompette-en-Chamade on the other end of the chapel, all playing against the full choruses of the world's largest all-pipe organ in a house of worship.
