You can also do this while it is in the tank if it is too heavy for you to lift out:
You want to remove the top manifold and leave all the grids in the tank. Now we want to take the partial grid out first -- the small little one and check it. After you inspect it and find it is ok or not -- replace it back into the tank along with the other grids. Then take another gird out. So take one grid out, inspect it -- change it if torn and replace to back in its slot in the tank. This is how you do it so that you can easily rebuild it. If you pull all eight grids out you are going to have some difficulty in rebuilding it. So you want to do this until all eight grids are inspected for tears. The grids all should be near or in the proper place to drop the top manifold down. Carefully put it back on over the grids. This will take some time as it is challenging. But be patient. There is no real trick -- you just need everything to be aligned perfectly and it will drop back down. You want to tighten it up good so that there are no gaps.

Notes:
In this video I show you how to clean a top manifold D.E. filter. You will find this configuration on Jandy, Pentair FNS plus, Hayward and American Products Titan filters. I will show you a simple way to clean them without taking them apart. I also show you how to check for damaged grids that cause D.E. to leak back into the pool.

The top manifold filters are not easy to take apart and rebuild unless you have done this several times. Some have one rod and others have 2 rods holding them together. The key is to take just one grid out while keeping the rest intact (having a helper would be great) that way you don't lose the pattern. If you take all 8 grids apart at once, chances are you will struggle to get it back together.

There is a guide on the newer filters so use it to rebuilt the filter. The grids should align with the guide. Also the top manifold has a pipe that goes back on the stem inside the filter, the bottom manifold will have a gap that aligns with this right next to the small partial grid. Some top manifolds are marked "small grid here" to help with the alignment.
Once you start putting the grids back into the top manifold it is crucial you do this very carefully as to not break off more plastic tops from the grids. Each grid will run you about $30.00 so you don't want to replace more than you need too. They are incredible fragile unfortunately.

So, with that said if you don't need to take this filter apart, don't. Unless it is leaking D.E. just clean it like I did in the video.

Lastly, before you start this project go to your local pool store a pick up a STEM O-RING, just tell them your filter type, all of them should be the same o-ring. That is the little black o-ring seen in the video before I put the grids back in the filter.
