Nassim Abi Ghanem sees Iran juggling internal anger and external pressure, using regional proxies as bargaining chips to keep the regime alive. The current protests didn’t come out of nowhere – they’re the result of years of frustration over economic hardship, political repression, and the regime’s focus on funding wars and allies abroad instead of caring for its own people. What makes this moment different is the intensity of the protests and how openly people are calling for the entire regime to step down.
Abi Ghanem argues that Iran’s leadership, especially the Revolutionary Guard, is unlikely to give up power peacefully and will probably respond with force if unrest escaletes. He also says the protests are tied to Iran’s weakening position in the region, where groups like Hezbollah and the Houthis are under growing military and financial pressure.
While Iran appears to have paused executions after U.S. threats, Abi Ghanem warns this could be temporary and hard to verify because of internet blackouts and lack of transparency.
