"CONERU -DIMENSION GIRL-" is a pretty swell game that just needs... more! Somewhat fortunately, there is a development roadmap for the game to support it after its launch on May 28th (2025) which runs through to September, but the downside is that we won't know the full extent of the added content until then... but what's here is fairly slick!
Published by HIKE GAMES Inc. (who were also involved in some pretty cool games like "Project Tachyon" and "Metallic Child") and developed by Novus (a game studio owned by CREST) and Eallin Japan Co.Ltd., the game actually feels quite inspired with a goofy plot, fun and fully voiced characters (some of whom are famous seiyus like the extremely prolific Norio Wakamoto to Konomi Kohara who is best know as Chika Fujiwara in "Kaguya-sama: Love Is War" to Mariko Higashiuchi known for her roles in "Naruto Shippuuden" and "Fruits Basket", among others) and general hijinks. The game is spawned from an original work simply known as "Dimension Girl" by "Gravity Beyond XD" led by "Hyperspace" which dates back to the early 2020s. Subsequently named Coneru Hyperspace (aka Subspace Coneru), she is a charming 3D diva of sorts who was featured in numerous visualizations for different songs and covers along with the "artist", Metro Mew, who grew in popularity enough that she expanded her market into video games.
The game's premise is admittedly a bit of an odd one: A sentient combat android is found one day in a scrap heap by a wandering young genius, Dr. Otsukimi, and taken home with him to figure out what ticks. Going by the name of Socrates, the android can't do much with limited energy reserves other than to attempt moving inside a specialized chamber that only does the bare minimum and speak brief statements. After running 999 different diagnostic tests, Dr. Otsukimi leaves Socrates for the day and quietly conducts further research, but he has many sophisticated black boxes and encrypted files... one in particular that jumps out at him is known as "Category: DIMENSION GIRL", but he doesn't have time to think about it. Little does he know, however, that the "Dimension Girl" had already planned to make a visit to Earth today to do some sightseeing... but instead of possessing a cat or other organic matter, she "incarnates" Socrates instead! After brief introductions and the good doctor catches wind, he informs the new duo (Conerates for "short") that the mayor of Shinjuku City has been captured by an antagonistic alien organization known as "Hate Fruit Company".
On that note, while Dr. Otsukimi is distracted while Socrates and Coneru decide that they can easily deal with the threat with their combined powers and decide to see all kinds of sights and sounds on Earth while they do it... together! C:DG's elevator pitch is "A 2D Action Date Game", meaning that the premise involves not only doing things you normally do in action games like punching and kicking and shooting and jumping and such, but you also want to look on your handy dandy map of each level to identify any "Date Spots" or places of interest to show a girl a good time while you defeat mildly evil adversaries. Socrates leverages different weapons you find such as sonic boots, wands, hammers, swords and things while Coneru manages the projectiles and long-range attacks with her patented "Coneru Beam"... but this gal's beam is special and is powered by her emotions, so it changes pretty regularly depending on how she's feeling! Finding spots of interest on your (mis)adventure won't just increase your overall fighting prowess, but many of them will inspire her to come up with new beams to dispatch enemies, and there's a wide variety of them from silly ones to almighty ones to a literal Kamehameha Wave that obliterates foes. Defeating enemies and finding lightning rods will also power you up.
Coneru's last major ability is a big one: RunRun Mode. Because she loves sweets, when she eats enough, she becomes hyper, making the player briefly invincible with massively increased speed, jumping and smashing power (able to access normally inaccessible areas); using your map is very important during this time to chart quicker routes to secrets off the beaten path! The game has an almost cheeky tone with just a small sprinkle of darker moments and it's delightfully judicious, such as the spoof of "Shonen Jump" comics spread about which teaches Coneru about the world of manga (called "Shonen Shampoo" because it comes off phonetically similar when spoken in Japanese Katakana). The game looks great, sounds dope and I just wish there were more areas... there's four main ones of decent size and you repeat them multiple times (it's story related and they change a bit, but still). The game's a bit pricey for what you get, but it's an easy rec on sale. This is a video of one loop. You can get it at:
