Contrary to popular perceptions, Australia has always been a reading country. The English language and the literary monuments of the past were instruments in the service of Empire, but colonial readers did not passively replicate home culture; they interpreted and sometimes resisted it. But what did Australians read?
Drawing on autobiographies and other forms of ego-documents, Professor Martyn Lyons investigates the popularity of Shakespeare, Dickens, Scott and others, and what Australians made of them.
Martyn Lyons is Emeritus Professor of History at the University of New South Wales and 2023 Merewether Fellow at the State Library. He is the author of several books on the history of reading and writing in Europe and Australia, and co-edited A History of the Book in Australia, 1891-1946.
