Influencing the properties such as mechanical characteristics or microstructure of additively manufactured metallic components is increasingly becoming the focus of research. One way to influence the process and the interaction between energy source and material in L-PBF is to vary the laser beam intensity distribution - which is easily possible with the nLIGHT’s AFX laser. After a brief explanation of the underlying beam-shaping technology, we present results on how the microstructure and mechanical properties of the nickel-based superalloy IN718 are influenced by three different intensity distributions. Further process insights and qualification methods are discussed via high performance thermography.
