On Sunday, June 15, 2025, just as the light was fading, I set up my tripod to shoot a spoken word improv about creativity, writing, and carrying out the trash. That’s when my longtime friend, John van Hasselt—visiting from Paris—said, “I’ve got an idea for a little movie.”
John has lived with Parkinson’s for six years. That evening, he decided to riff on George A. Romero’s Night of the Living Dead, using humor and improvisation to explore what it feels like to navigate life with Parkinson’s—the haze, the disconnection, the longing to reach others. I had no idea what he’d do. I just pressed record.
Yes, the condition is terrible. But what John brings is something much more powerful than tragedy: honesty, presence, and a sense of humor. He’s not hiding. He’s showing up, fully, with courage and imagination. That’s what this short video is about.
Like Michael J. Fox, John knows that revealing the truth of a difficult illness doesn’t diminish us—it invites connection. When you let people see you, they often step forward to help. Sometimes the most courageous act is to be visible, even in the dark.
