25/05/2013 Spud's Best & Fairest Was Charity

This Saturday Rub clip features JB, Garry, Spud and Damo with a mini bombshell courtesy of an ex-teammate of Danny's. His credibility has been called into question and Damo has the story. But as soon as he begins, Garry jumps right into defending his "great mate", despite being the one leading the charge on the whole Chomp bomb two weeks earlier. Again, a bigger double agent than any of the Soviets. The story goes back into Spud's playing days, where he thinks he's safe, something Jim finds particularly chuckle-worthy. Spud describes himself as a competitor, beaten, but never defeated, even back to his Bungaree days. This prompts Purple to point out how he never made the Bungaree Team of the Century, which gets Spud's back up pretty fast, because he turns the tables on Damo's successes... the HB Pencil award, he reckons. I love when he asks, "And what did you win?" His exclusion from the St. Kilda Team of the Century is also brought up, which we all know by now. But there were a few accolades, specifically the 1988 Best & Fairest award. It's around about here that Garry starts sounding like he knows what's about to come, because he mentions not being able to take away that award. Yet, one of Spud's good friends, Nicky Winmar, is about to do just that. Last Thursday, on the Marngrook Footy Show, Winmar was asked whether he should have won a few more Best & Fairest awards, to which he responded that the one in 1988 should have been his, but the club felt sorry for Spud being in his last year, and gave it to him as charity. And cue the howling from the boys. Unbelievable. Spud confirms that his contract still had two years left on it, hence, it couldn't have been his last year, and vehemently denies that Winmar was correct. Then someone's posted a photo of the two mates at the award that night, and if you look at the actual image rather than the poor quality of the video, I swear you can see his one fake chomp sticking out amongst the rest of them. Imagine what it would look like now after being touched up. They also think he has a dunny bowl haircut. Spud tries to shoot the story down, suggesting their good performance in the ratings recently might be undone by a poor segment that leaves the listeners flocking to the AM station. I don't think so, Spudly. And then he begins to fire up. He reckons he was robbed three times throughout his playing career and should have won a total of 4 Best & Fairests himself! When they quiz him on them, he has a story to back up one of them, but then goes to water on the other two and has to admit he may have exaggerated.
