This song is called “Çuta Nusa” and comes from the Laz folk tradition. The original author is anonymous; the modern performance is by Turkish musician Birol Topaloğlu.
The Laz are an ethnic group of Caucasian origin, mainly settled along Turkey’s Black Sea coast. The Laz language belongs to the Kartvelian family and is currently endangered.
Laz music is a cultural treasure transmitted through words, rhythms, and traditional instruments. Among its core instruments are the tulum (a kind of bagpipe, also known as “guda”), the kemençe (çemane), and the zurna.
Since the late 20th century, Laz music has seen a revival. Notably, Kâzım Koyuncu brought Laz language songs into mainstream awareness and became a cultural icon. He used his music to emphasize Laz identity and put it into public discourse.
“Çuta Nusa” carries a mystical, bridging feel between past and present. By sharing this song, we aren’t just sharing music — we are amplifying a voice of identity, of a language, of a people.
